| Commonwealth of Massachusetts Customers Deregulation of the Energy Industries in Massachusetts is now a reality! The trouble is that many utility customers don't know how it's effecting their business. Well here's some background that hopefully will clear up some of the ambiguity. There are two principal parts of electric service. There are some differences among the different monopolies in the state but in general all service is broken into two sections: Transmission and Distribution The physical infrastructure (wires, etc.) that transmits the electricity to your business in Massachusetts today, Transmission & Distribution (T&D) remains the regulated responsibility of the utility (NSTAR, Mass Electric, etc.). This ensures that consumers retain the same high quality service for physical electrical infrastructure. For example, if a tree falls on the high-tension wires, the Monopoly Utility still manages the repairs. In this respect there is no change as a result of deregulation. Generation Supply The source of electrical generation (power plant, windmill, etc.) that produces the commodity of electricity that we all ultimately use. Deregulation in Massachusetts has affected this portion of your service. In summary, the new legislation allows you, the consumer, to choose which source of generation you would like to supply your electricity needs. Electricity is either provided through the Utility or through licensed Competitive Suppliers. There are many competitive suppliers of electricity in the state and some may be more efficient in supplying your electricity generation than others (depending on where you are located and what your needs are). Do you know what this means for your business? Did you know that not all Utilities are really giving you their best price? Click on new customers to find out more! |
