For decades, The Connecticut Light & Power Company (CL&P) and The United Illuminating Company (UI), were responsible for all three of the functions of providing electricity throughout Connecticut. These three functions were generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity to your home or business.
In 2000, as part of electric restructuring, CL&P and UI were required to sell their generating plants. As a result, they no longer produce electricity. Instead, CL&P and UI must purchase electricity for delivery to their customers. Because CL&P and UI no longer own power plants, other companies are now allowed to compete to sell electricity in Connecticut. This is the primary aspect of electric restructuring and the reason you can shop for electricity. However, CL&P and UI will continue to read your meter, deliver your power, and respond to electrical outages or billing questions.

Due to the new supplier contracts that both CL&P and UI have secured, electricity rates in CT have risen dramatically.
